90,000 healthcare workers infected with coronavirus worldwide

At least 90,000 healthcare workers have been infected with the new coronavirus across the globe, a new report says.

The report, by the International Council of Nurses, is based on data gathered from the council's member national nursing associations, official government figures and media reports from 30 countries.

The report states that 260 nurses have died during the pandemic. Last month, the council reported 100 nurse deaths worldwide.

The current report also shows that on average 6 percent of all confirmed COVID-19 cases are among healthcare workers.

The council said that there has been a lack of accurate data from governments across the globe.

"This failure to record both infection rates and deaths among healthcare workers is putting more nurses and their patients in danger," a media release from the council stated.

The council is calling on governments to collect data on healthcare worker infections and death.
