57 hospitals where employees have tested positive for COVID-19

Hospital employees are among the confirmed cases of COVID-19. Here are U.S. hospitals or other healthcare sites where employees have tested positive during the pandemic.

April 21-23

1. Artesia General Hospital reported on its Facebook page that a worker at its urgent care center in Carlsbad, N.M., tested positive for COVID-19. The hospital said it temporarily closed the clinic for thorough cleaning and disinfection.

2. Seventy employees at Iowa City-based University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics had tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 22, according to The Gazette. The health system also reported 38 COVID-19 inpatients as of April 22.

3. An employee at Charleston (W.Va.) Area Medical Center tested positive for COVID-19, hospital spokesperson Dale Witte told TV station WCHS. Mr. Witte said the employee came in contact with the virus in the community.

April 17-20

4. Thirteen employees across Albuquerque, N.M.-based Presbyterian Healthcare Services' statewide network tested positive for COVID-19, a spokesperson confirmed to the Santa Fe Reporter. That's up from two reported cases the week prior.

5. Duke Health said an employee at Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C., tested positive for COVID-19, according to The News & Observer. The health system said it notified patients and staff who might have had contact with the infected person. 

6. As of April 20, 30 staff at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Ga., had tested positive for COVID-19, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The facility is the state's maximum-security forensic hospital. Since the beginning of the pandemic, two hospital workers have died and 17 patients have been sickened, the Journal-Constitution reported.

7. Twenty-one employees at Kaweah Delta Medical Center in Visalia, Calif., tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Visalia Times-Delta. CEO Gary Herbst told the newspaper the employees were sent home to quarantine, and three of them have since fully recovered and returned to work.

April 15-16

8. A total of 118 workers at Greenville, S.C.-based Prisma Health tested positive for COVID-19, a hospital system spokesperson told the Greenville News April 15. Spokesperson Tammie Epps said more than half of the employee cases are work-related.

9. A Hartford (Conn.) Healthcare employee who tested positive for the new coronavirus has died, according to TV station WFSB. Ajay Kumar, MD, executive vice president and chief clinical officer for Hartford HealthCare, confirmed the news to media April 15. Hospital officials did not say where the employee worked or where the person was receiving treatment.

10. As of April 15, 40 staff at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Jamaica Plain, Mass., had tested positive for COVID-19, according to radio station WBUR. Sixty-two patients at the hospital had also tested positive.

11. As of April 15, 60 staff at Tewksbury (Mass.) State Hospital had tested positive for COVID-19, according to radio station WBUR. Seventy-five patients at the hospital had also tested positive.

12. An employee at Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, Kan., has tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Hays Daily News. In a news release cited by the newspaper, the hospital said the employee began self-quarantining at home after the test was performed.

April 13-14

13. Naples, Fla.-based NCH Healthcare System quarantined 78 employees, including 66 employees quarantined after a possible "exposure incident," the News-Press reported. The weekend incident was at the health system's downtown Baker Hospital in Naples.

14. As of April 13, Fort Myers, Fla. -based Lee Health had 122 employees under quarantine, the News-Press reported. Thirty employees there were infected after workplace exposure.

15. Thirteen employees at Stormont Vail Health in Topeka, Kan., tested positive for COVID-19, according to The Topeka Capital-Journal. Stormont Vail President and CEO Robert Kenagy told the newspaper the confirmed cases include a physician, and two of the 13 employees have recovered and returned to work.

16. Eight staff members at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, Maine, tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Morning Sentinel. The hospital said there is a "small cluster of COVID-19 cases" associated with the Rehab & Fitness building in Skowhegan, and the building has been temporarily closed while workers are quarantined and the building is being cleaned.

17. A physical therapy worker at Kula (Hawaii) Hospital tested positive for COVID-19, mauinow.com reported.  The state said 16 patients who were exposed to the worker have been tested, with no positive results, according to the website.

April 11-12

18. Lowell Hamel, MD, COO of St. Joseph, Mich.-based Spectrum Health Lakeland, tested positive for COVID-19, according to The Herald-Palladium. Dr. Hamel is being treated at Lakeland Medical Center, Spectrum Health Lakeland President Loren Hamel, MD, said in a video sent to employees and cited by the newspaper.

19. As of April 11, 12 patients and 24 employees at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Ga., had tested positive for COVID-19, according to WMAZ, which cites information from the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health. The state also reported that a second patient at the hospital has died of the coronavirus.

20. Western State Hospital, an acute care adult psychiatric facility in Hopkinsville, Ky., reported 16 staff testing positive for COVID-19, according to the Hoptown Chronicle. Thirteen patients have also tested positive, and two people from the hospital have died.

21. Nine Florida Department of Children and Families workers have tested positive for COVID-19, including an employee of Florida State Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Chattahoochee, officials confirmed to CBS Miami. The agency said 16 additional workers are self-isolating after being exposed to the coronavirus.

22. On April 12, Hawaii officials reported 31 COVID-19 cases connected to Wailuku-based Maui Memorial Medical Center: 22 workers and nine patients, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

April 9

23. Twelve workers at Springhill Medical Center in Mobile, Ala., tested positive for COVID-19, according to WKRG. The hospital told the TV station it could not release specifics about any of the workers due to HIPAA laws.

24. An employee at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, Calif., tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Chico Enterprise-Record. The hospital said the person had a "community-acquired" case, and the case was not due to workplace exposure, the newspaper reported.

25. Twenty-seven workers at CenterPointe Hospital in St. Charles, Mo., have tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 9, the St. Charles County Department of Public Health confirmed to FOX2now. The positive cases included registered nurses, mental health technicians, social workers and a housekeeper at the psychiatric hospital, the TV station reported. Some employees have returned to work while others remain quarantined.

April 6-8

26. More than 700 employees of Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System had tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 6. The positive cases represent 2.1 percent of the health system's workforce.

27. Sixty Greenwich (Conn.) Hospital staff had tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 7, the hospital's CEO told Greenwich Free Press and other news organizations during a press conference. Norman Roth said some of the employees and physicians who tested positive were starting to return to work.

28. Presbyterian Hospital officials said two workers at the Albuquerque, N.M.-based facility tested positive for COVID-19, according to TV station KOB 4. The hospital said workers with positive results are sent home to self-isolate.

29. An employee at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque tested positive for COVID-19, according to TV station KOB 4. The individual notified co-workers about the positive result.

30. At Ann Arbor-based Michigan Medicine, 110 employees had tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 6, according to health system information cited by clickondetroit.com. That's out of the 728 employees tested at Michigan Medicine.

31. State officials announced that 15 workers at Maui Memorial Hospital in Wailuku, Hawaii, tested positive for COVID-19, according to KHON2. The employees tested positive over the last few weeks.

32. Kindred Hospital-San Antonio Central in Texas said three of its employees have tested positive for COVID-19, according to mysanantonio.com. The hospital reported April 8 that no patients had tested positive.

33. Paul Skolnik, MD, chair for the department of medicine, said a small number of employees at Roanoke, Va.-based Carilion Clinic tested positive for COVID-19 over the last several weeks, according to WDBJ. The employees, their patients and others at the hospital who they may have had contact with are isolated, according to Dr. Skolnik.

34. Certain workers at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper, Ind., tested positive for COVID-19, hospital representatives confirmed to WFIE. The hospital did not provide a specific number.

35. Four employees at Athens (Ala.)-Limestone Hospital tested positive for COVID-19, the hospital confirmed to WHNT. Spokesperson Felicia Lambert told the TV station the hospital is following CDC guidelines for quarantine procedures.

April 5

36. At least 22 employees from the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Free Press. A medical center spokesperson told the newspaper that the employees' occupations could not be provided in order to protect their privacy.

April 1-4

37. Highland Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., reported nearly a dozen employees infected with COVID-19, according to the Democrat and Chronicle. The hospital locked down an acute care unit for geriatric patients, and an untold number of employees were directed to quarantine at home, according to the report.

38. Forty employees at Worcester-based UMass Memorial Health Care had tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 2, according to masslive.com, which cites updated information from the health system. Seventy-six employees were on quarantine at that time.

39. Medical University of South Carolina officials said 38 people who work at the hospital's facilities in Charleston had tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 1, The State reported April 2. A spokesperson said many cases were transmitted from within the community and via travel.

40. Cincinnati Children's Hospital officials said some of its employees had tested positive for COVID-19, but did not tell how many, WLWT reported. 

41. An employee at Oregon State Hospital in Salem tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Salem Reporter. A spokesperson for the Oregon Health Authority told the publication the employee worked inside the secure area of the psychiatric facility.

42. Three employees at Fauquier Health in Warrenton, Va., tested positive for COVID-19, according to FauquierNow. One employee is a care provider who was not in direct patient care when COVID-19 symptoms began, Fauquier Health spokesperson Sarah Cubbage told FauquierNow. The other two employees are not care providers, Ms. Cubbage said.

43. Four employees at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y., tested positive for COVID-19, according to syracuse.com. The hospital also reported 11 patients with the coronavirus disease.

44. An employee at Bolivar, Mo.-based Citizens Memorial Hospital has tested positive for COVID-19, the Bolivar Herald-Free Press reported. The employee has been recovering at home and is self-quarantining with family, according to a hospital news release provided to the newspaper.

45. Eleven employees at VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System in North Las Vegas have tested positive for COVID-19, KLAS reported. A statement obtained by the TV station said the employees were immediately placed in isolation away from its facilities.

March 27-31

46. Seven employees at Syracuse N.Y..-based St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center have tested positive for COVID-19, according to syracuse.com. A hospital statement obtained by the website said the individuals are under quarantine at home.

47. An employee at El Paso (Texas) Children's Hospital who provides patient care has tested positive for COVID-19, KTSM reported. The employee self-isolated and self-monitored after members of a group the individual traveled with became symptomatic, the hospital told the TV station.

48. An employee at Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw, Ind., has tested positive for COVID-19, according to timesuniononline.com. Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Lutheran Health Network said its hospital is providing care for the individual.

49. Two employees at Huntsville, Ala.-based Crestwood Medical Center have tested positive for COVID-19, WAAY reported. One is a physician and the other is another hospital worker, a hospital spokesperson told the TV station.

50. Two employees at Moses Lake, Wash.-based Samaritan Healthcare tested positive for COVID-19, NBC Right Now reported. The employees were at home in isolation as of March 30.

51. Twelve staff members of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland tested positive for COVID-19, oregonlive.com reported. According to the hospital's president, Danny Jacobs, 846 nurses, physicians and other staff were tested as of March 29.

52. More than 100 employees at Beth Israel Lahey Health in Boston tested positive for COVID-19, WHDH reported. A health system spokesperson told the TV station that 109 workers at nine facilities, including Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Burlington, Mass.-based Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, were being treated and quarantined as of March 27.

53. Eighty-six employees at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., tested positive for COVID-19, the hospital confirmed to Fox 17 News. The hospital said 37 of those infected employees had returned to work as of March 30 after passing a required quarantine period.

54. Carlos Migoya, CEO of Miami-based Jackson Health System, has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a March 30 statement shared by the Miami-based health system on Twitter. Mr. Migoya said he was asymptomatic but was tested due to exposure to other people who tested positive. He is self-isolating at home.

55. Forty-five employees at Louisville, Ky.-based Norton Healthcare tested positive for COVID-19, WDRB reported. In a video obtained by the TV station and sent to employees March 29, CEO Russ Cox said 282 workers remained furloughed due to symptoms and were in self-quarantine.

56. Six employees at Jackson-based University of Mississippi Medical Center tested positive for COVID-19, the Clarion Ledger reported. Alan Jones, MD, director of emergency medicine, told the newspaper exposure appears to be from outside the hospital.

57. Two employees at Mercy Hospital Springfield (Mo.) tested positive for COVID-19 after recent out-of-state travel, the Springfield News-Leader reported. A statement provided to the newspaper said the employees were at home.
