With Revenue Up but Membership Falling, Humana Cuts 1,400 Jobs

Following an 11 percent drop in health plan membership in 2009, Humana this year plans to cut a net of 1,400 positions, or 5 percent, according to a release from Humana.

The nationwide health plan will cut 2,500 jobs and add about new 1,100 jobs in areas such as cost containment, pharmacy management and specialty products.

Humana’s 2009 revenue increased 7 percent, to $31 billion, over 2008. But 2009 membership fell by almost 1.3 million from 2008, with the largest drop in Medicare, where the company lost 1.1 million beneficiaries, or 23.7 percent of its 2008 total.

“We have made a commitment to reduce our administrative costs in line with society’s goal for a revamped health care system in which costs must be contained,” a Humana executive told Business First of Louisville. “The effort has to do, generally speaking, with becoming a more agile and efficient company. And it also has to do with growing in areas such as medical cost containment for our members.”
