Building consumer trust is imperative in creating a sustainable business, but just as crucial is fostering internal trust among team members, which will result in an organizationwide tendency toward innovation.

In a recent op-ed for Inc, Soren Kaplan, PhD, founder and managing principal of consulting firm InnovationPoint, suggested that organizations with higher levels of internal trust are not only happier and more confident in their decision-making, but also feel more empowered to take risks when innovating.

As for how to build that trust, Dr. Kaplan cited the “10 laws of trust,” as originally developed by Joel Peterson, chairman of JetBlue Airways and a consulting professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

The 10 laws are:

1. Start with personal integrity

2. Invest in respect

3. Empower others

4. Measure what you want to achieve

5. Create a common dream

6. Keep everyone informed

7. Embrace respectful conflict

8. Show humility

9. Strive for win-win negotiations

10. Fix breaches immediately
