The Patient Choice and Control at End of Life Act has already received Senate approval, and Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin is expected to sign the legislation into law.

Vermont is the first state to approve “death with dignity” legislation through its legislature. Oregon and Washington state have similar laws in place, but these were approved through a ballot initiative, according to the report.
