Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, Tenn.). Vanderbilt University Medical Center has been around for almost 140 years, and no hospital in Tennessee is more highly awarded or recognized than VUMC.
VUMC includes 626-bed Vanderbilt University Hospital, 271-bed Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital and two other specialty hospitals, giving the medical center more than 1,000 beds. For 2013-14, U.S. News & World Report ranked VUMC No. 1 in Tennessee and a top 50 hospital in 11 specialties, including urology, otolaryngology, pulmonology, cancer, nephrology and neurosurgery. Truven Health Analytics, The Leapfrog Group, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the American Hospital Association and several other groups have also bestowed awards to VUMC.
As the premier academic medical center in the Nashville area, faculty and staff have worked diligently to make VUMC a hub for medical breakthroughs. Vanderbilt researchers within its Medical and Electromechanical Design Lab are in the process of testing “steerable” needles using a robot-guided system. The new, flexible surgical tools could help other providers more accurately treat difficult-to-reach conditions, like brain tumors, while also preserving healthy tissue. Overall, 30 Vanderbilt faculty are members of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering.
