The lawsuits were filed by patients who claim they were infected with blood-borne diseases as a result of unsafe injection practices, according to the report. The first trial is set to begin on Oct. 19, with two others in December and January. Seven other cases remain on hold.
The trials were delayed on July 17 when the clinics declared bankruptcy. Lawyers for bankruptcy trustee Brian Shapiro urged that the civil cases be delayed to collect information about the company’s assets to ensure that all suing patients could be paid.
Lawyers for the patients said that any judgments would be handled by a state court or bankruptcy judge later on, so the company’s malpractice insurance would not be drained by the first group of patients, according to the report.
