An e-mail from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics said the organization must cut at least $17 million from its budget by next July, according to a report by the Daily Iowan.

In addition to an $11 million cut announced this past June, the organization faces a $5.7 million loss in patient-care revenue due to the state’s 5 percent cut in Medicaid funding last month.

The organization has reduced retirement benefits, is saving money through efficiencies, such as improving patient safety, and plans to order furloughs and layoffs for employees.

While the University of Iowa is receiving federal stimulus dollars for research, that money cannot be used for regular patient care, the organization said.
