The U.S. Department of Defense unexpectedly dropped the insurer from its health plan contracts last month when it penned separate five-year agreements with Louisville, Ky.-based Humana and Rancho Cordova, Calif.-based Health Net.

UnitedHealthcare filed protests over both West and East region contracts, which Health Net and Humana now control, respectively. UnitedHealthcare has managed care for TRICARE’s West region since 2012, according to Military Times.

“Throughout this process, UnitedHealthcare remains committed to continuing to deliver high quality healthcare to our current West region beneficiaries,” the insurer told Becker’s Hospital Review.

The DOD said it can not comment on its decision-making process, the Star Tribune reported. GAO typically decides on protests within 100 days.
