Uninsured rate fell to 8.8% in 2016

The U.S. uninsured rate dropped 0.3 percentage points between 2015 and 2016 to 8.8 percent, or 28.1 million Americans, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report.

In comparison, 91.2 percent of Americans had health insurance in 2016. Of insured Americans, 67.5 percent received health coverage through a private policy, while 37.3 percent had coverage through a government plan.

The rate of Medicare coverage also increased within the timeframe. Medicare covered 16.7 percent of Americans in 2016, up from 16.3 percent a year prior.
