Trump administration considers death penalty for opioid drug dealers

As the Trump administration considers strategies to combat the opioid epidemic, it is weighing policy that would make dealing drugs a capital offense, among other more stringent, noncapital punishment, according to a report from The Washington Post.

The Domestic Policy Council and the Department of Justice are investigating policies and could announce potential changes within weeks, according to the report. Senior administration officials told the Post that the White House is particularly interested in drug policy from Singapore, where drug dealers can receive the death penalty.

Currently in the U.S., the death penalty only applies to the following drug-related offenses:

  • Murder in a drive-by shooting
  • Murder with a firearm, related to drug trafficking crime
  • Murder related to drug trafficking
  • Death of a law enforcement officer related to drug crime
