Top Executives of Denver’s Exempla System Ousted in Catholic Group’s Takeover

CEO Jeff Selberg and several other executives of Exempla Healthcare in Denver have been ousted following transfer of control of the four-hospital system to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System, according to the Denver Business Journal.

Mr. Selberg, who had led efforts to block the transfer, is leaving along with Bob Malte, CEO of Exempla Lutheran Medical Center; Bob Minkin, CEO of Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital; Judy Mitchell, senior vice president of Exempla System Services; and Kay Taylor, vice president of Exempla System Services.

Sisters of Charity, based in Lenexa, Kan., had been sharing control of Exempla with Community First Foundation, but Community First recently transferred much of its interest to Sisters of Charity so that it could focus on more general philanthropy.

William Murray, president and CEO of Sisters of Charity and the new chairman of Exempla’s board, announced the management changes in a letter to Exempla employees, stating that the board “initiated these changes as a means to further integrate” Exempla into Sisters of Charity.

Critics of Sisters of Charity’s takeover said it would limit medical choices such as use of birth control.

Sisters of Charity already stated last year it would eventually appoint new management for Exempla.
