Dr. Cosgrove said in the interview that Congress and healthcare leadership need to focus on improving healthcare delivery systems that are efficient and improve the quality of care for patients. While he notes that Congress has done a good job of improving access to care, they have done very little to improve the quality of care and to reduce healthcare costs for the country.
Physicians moving away from a solo practice model and working as a team was another crucial step towards improving care noted by Dr. Cosgrove. According to the report, Dr. Cosgrove says coordination and teamwork among providers results in superior patient care.
Finally, Dr. Cosgrove emphasized the need for physicians to seek out leadership training in order meet the challenges faced by healthcare reform. “Doctors traditionally have not had schools for leadership, but leadership is not something that is inherent; you learn it and you work with it. It’s important that you get opportunities early on to lead and develop those capabilities and get coaching,” he said in the interview.
