The closure was announced in April, and hospital administrators said the move is the first step to make the hospital sustainable for the future.

College Station Medical Center did not disclose how many staff members were laid off but said some were transferred to other units at the hospital.

“It doesn’t just affect us nurses. It affects doctors, lab technicians, the pharmacists. It affects everyone in the hospital,” Stephanie Baisey, a longtime nurse at the hospital, said of the closure. “We’re trying to be positive and think about all the babies we’ve had and the ones we’ve been lucky to be a part of their lives, but it’s sad. We’ve all tried to stay in denial for as long as we could.”

The medical center will continue to offer women’s services, such as gynecological exams, mammograms and surgeries.
