The hospital received the first evacuation order at 4:15 p.m. July 28, according to ABC 10. The 14 inpatients and one emergency room patient were transferred to other facilities. The hospital reopened for emergency and obstetrics services the morning of July 29 but was forced to evacuate again that night after the fire worsened. Eight patients were evacuated July 29.

The Mendocino Complex wildfire, which consists of the Ranch and River Fires, expanded fivefold in less than a day and surged eastward, prompting the second evacuation.

The Ranch and River Fires were both 5 percent contained as of 9:38 p.m. July 28, according to the Lake County News.
