Researchers compared data on incorrect surgical procedures performed at VA medical centers from 2001-2006 to those performed from 2006-2009 when the VA implemented the Medical Team Training program. The program provided training on ensuring correct surgery to improve surgical patient safety.
The rate of reported adverse events decreased from 3.21 to 2.4 per month, while reported close calls increased from 1.97 to 3.24 per month. The authors concluded that although gains were made, more needs to be done to continue improvement in reducing incorrect surgical procedures.
