Since being established in 2010, Spectrum Health Innovations has successfully launched 13 products, 11 patents and three active startup companies. Products and technologies within the SHI pipeline encompass medical devices, surgical tools, nursing products, hospital equipment, therapy equipment and software.
These ideas are transformed into tangible solutions through a process SHI has spent six years refining. The department pairs clinicians who have identified obstacles in their daily activities with professors and students in engineering and industrial design, resulting in healthcare tools and software that directly address clinicians’ needs and fit smoothly into their actual workflow.
SHI has also earned seven awards, totaling $1.2 million, including a $727,000 grant from the City of Grand Rapids’ Smartzone Local Development Finance Authority; $171,640 in funding from the Michigan Translational Research and Commercialization for Life Sciences Innovation Hub; and another $33,836 from Mi-Kickstart, to advance the development of Spectrum Health Innovations’ Dynamic Tensioning Shoulder Brace.
