South Dakota puts Medicaid expansion on the ballot

South Dakota voters will have a voice in whether the state expands its Medicaid program, Kaiser Health News reported Jan. 6.

Officials announced Jan. 3 that the state received the 33,922 petition signatures required to move the issue to a public vote on the November 2022 ballot.

Should the vote pass on Nov. 8, South Dakota would be the 39th state to expand its Medicaid program and provide 42,000 residents with coverage.

However, Republicans are aiming to include a measure on the June primary ballots that would raise the bar to pass any bill that would raise taxes or the state’s budget by over $10 million — which includes Medicaid expansion.
