Sebelius Seeks Private Dollars for Exchange Enrollment, GOP Cries Foul

Left with limited funding for enrollment campaigns in states with federally run health insurance exchanges, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius reached out to executives in the healthcare industry to help with the recruitment efforts. That’s put the agency on the defensive as GOP lawmakers, including Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), claim the fundraising requests from industry may violate federal law, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

President Barack Obama has met with insurance executives and Planned Parenthood clinics to help encourage the uninsured to enroll on the exchanges when they open for enrollment in October. HHS has a $150 million budget for community grants to do the same, and Secretary Sebelius has made similar good-faith pleas for assistance getting the public onto the online marketplaces for coverage.

However, she has also requested financial assistance from private industry to help the agency’s efforts, although HHS claims it has not sought or accepted funding from hospitals, health insurers or pharmaceutical companies it regulates.
