A clinic-based system to provide healthcare in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina could serve as a national model for providing low-cost primary care to low-income groups, according to a report by the Commonwealth Fund.
The report, based on a survey of clinic patients, finds that only 27 percent went without needed healthcare because of cost, compared with 41 percent of adults across the country.
Only 4 percent of the patients experienced duplicate medical tests or unavailable medical records compared with 34 percent nationally.
