Jefferson Regional Medical Center has purchased and closed a competing imaging center in suburban Pittsburgh as it expands its own imaging services in the area, according to a report by Pittsburgh Business Times.

The hospital bought West Mifflin Imaging Associates on May 1 and shut it down the same day. The Pittsburgh hospital has introduced medical imaging at its Jefferson Regional Health Pavilion, which the hospital purchased for $13.5 million in 2008.

Having ended fiscal 2009 with an operating loss of 12.84 percent, following three years of growth in net patient revenue, Jefferson Regional wants to get back in the black by expanding outpatient services. The margin for outpatient services such as imaging is much higher than for inpatient care because overhead is lower.
