NJ patient accused of attempted murder nearly escapes psychiatric facility

After being indicted for attempted murder in 2013, Tyrik Haynes has attempted something else: escaping the psychiatric facility where he’s been since then, according to app.com.

Three years ago, Mr. Haynes was charged with stabbing Kerri Dalton multiple times while she pushed her five-month-old baby’s stroller through a Bed, Bath and Beyond. The Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals also said Mr. Haynes was charged with lighting a cat on fire during the same year.

Since his indictment, Mr. Haynes has been held in Trenton (N.J.) Psychiatric Hospital. On July 30, he walked away from the facility but was found and returned the next day by the Department of Human Services.

Mr. Haynes’ current location was not revealed in the report.

“It is important to note that psychiatric hospitals are not prisons and that patients do have certain ground rules and travel privileges granted by a judge as their behavioral health conditions improve,” DHS spokesperson Nicole Brossoie wrote in an email, according to the report. “Efforts to return patients that have left the hospital without these privileges are to ensure their safety and care.”
