Mr. Suthrum breaks medicine into six steps:
• Underlying indicators
• Visible symptoms
• Preliminary consultation
• Core consultation
• Assessment and plan
• Follow up
He proposes that these steps need to be “re-imagined and executed remotely” so physicians and patients do not need to meet face-to-face. In order to deliver healthcare remotely, Mr. Suthrum outlines eight advanced technologies that enable a physician to do so such as Lab-on-a-chip — an integrated microfluidics device that performs various laboratory functions, pocket ultrasound devices, smartphone or tablet-compatible ECG and vitals devices, EHR software, telemedicine software and digital stethoscopes.
The United States faces problems with access to healthcare, premature deaths and preventable illnesses. According to Mr. Suthrum, remote healthcare delivery can help stop disease at the source, encouraging patients to deal with medical problems before they become exorbitantly expensive and unnecessarily complicated.
