New Jersey Legislation Requires Fuller Hospital Error Disclosures

New legislation, to be signed into law by New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, requires hospitals in the state to make public more detailed information regarding medical errors, according to a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Under the new legislation, the Health and Senior Services Department will publish data regarding the frequency of certain hospital errors, such as wrong site surgery or leaving a sponge or instrument inside of a patient’s body. New Jersey previously required the department to publish the number of preventable errors that occurred, not information on individual hospitals, according to the report.

The new legislation also prohibits hospitals from charging patients or insurers for treatment related to certain medical errors or hospital-acquired conditions, according to the report.
