Nebraska Lawmakers Approve One-Year Hospital Moratorium

Nebraska lawmakers have passed a bill that will place a one-year moratorium on the construction of new hospitals in the state, according to a report by the Omaha World-Herald.

The legislation, LB 999, was introduced after a dispute between physicians constructing a physician-owned hospital in Kearney, Neb., and competitor Good Samaritan Health System. However, the physician-owned hospital will be exempt from the moratorium because it is already under construction.

In March, the physicians opening the hospital and Good Samaritan tentatively agreed to work together to open the new hospital. Opponents of the new hospital still contend that two hospitals are unnecessary in Kearney, according to the report.
