National Association of Medicaid Directors releases report on children’s healthcare needs after COVID-19: 6 things to know

The National Association of Medicaid Directors released a report, “Medicaid Forward: Children’s Health,” that highlights emerging data on challenges facing children in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and opportunities for assistance from Medicaid leaders. Here are six things to know:

  1. Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program currently provide coverage to more than 37 million children.
  2. Children received 44 percent fewer health screenings between March and May of 2020 compared to the same period the previous year. 
  3. As of April, more than 40 percent of children were not experiencing in-person learning.
  4. Twenty percent of the 40,000 children who lost parents to COVID-19 are Black.
  5. The report suggests addressing mental health opportunities among adolescents through efforts that include continued telehealth support as well as collaboration with health systems, plans and providers. 
  6. The report suggests Medicaid leaders analyze data related to children’s health in their communities, and then create a “sprint” team to address issues they’ve uncovered.
