Missouri governor says Medicaid cuts imminent if provider tax deal isn’t reached

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson said he would be forced to make Medicaid budget cuts in July if lawmakers didn’t agree to renew a critical healthcare provider tax, according to The Kansas City Star June 7.

Lawmakers failed to renew the tax, which expires Sept. 30, during a heated May 14 session.

The tax, which is collected from hospitals, nursing homes and pharmacies, assists in the federal funding of treatment for low-income elderly and disabled Medicaid beneficiaries, the article said.

Missouri’s fiscal year begins July 1.

“The clock’s ticking on us,” Mr. Parson told the publication. “If there’s not some sort of agreement where we have a solution, and it doesn’t happen before July 1, there’s not going to be choices. We’re going to have to start withholding [from the budget] July 1.”
