Memorial Sloan-Kettering Asks Zoning Board to Lift Restrictions for Outpatient Center Expansion

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Commack (N.Y.) plans to expand its facility and is looking to the Smithtown (N.Y.) zoning board to lift certain restrictions placed on the property, according to a Commack Patch report.

Commack, N.Y. is a census-designated place (a concentration of population identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes), which corresponds directly to an unincorporated community by the same name in the towns of Huntington, N.Y., and Smithtown, N.Y.

The center plans to build a 37,275-square-foot expansion. Memorial Sloan-Kettering is asking the board to lift a restriction that dictates the maximum gross floor area be 65,000 square feet. The center’s maximum gross floor area including the expansion would total nearly 90,000 square feet.

The center is also asking the board to remove limitations on waste water per day and medical laboratory space.

A supervisor of the board told Commack Patch that he would be willing to approve the expansion but has asked Memorial Sloan-Kettering if it would consider offering a pilot payment to the town, according to the report.
