Massachusetts Seeks $480M Additional Federal Funds for Universal Access Program

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is asking for $480 million more in additional Medicaid funding for hospitals as part of the federal waiver for its universal access program, according to a report by the Boston Globe.

The proposed grant, for this fiscal year and the next, would apportion $216 million to the public Cambridge Health Alliance and $115 million for six private hospitals with high Medicaid patient populations, including Boston Medical Center and Caritas Carney in Boston.

Under Massachusetts’ current Medicaid waiver package, negotiated in 2008 and in place until July 2011, the state can spend up to $21.2 billion, half from the federal government, to subsidize health insurance for residents with incomes higher than Medicaid’s typical level.
