The two-block radius surrounding the gas leak was evacuated while Pacific Gas & Electric crews shut off the leak and police directed traffic around the affected area.
No injuries were reported and the shelter-in-place alert was lifted at 7:30 p.m. Streets in the area remained closed until 8 a.m. Thursday.
A shelter-in-place alert requires residents to take refuge in an interior room with few windows.
