Although the hospitals have a history of working together, the new study will investigate three areas of a possible partnership — improving quality of care, increased access and improved cost efficiencies, according to the report.

A possible merger would help the two hospitals in a highly competitive environment, according to the report. Mercy also has a stake in Siouxland Surgery Center, although the report did not say if the surgery center would be considered in the study.

The results of the study will be released in spring of 2010, according to the report.
