Illinois Employee Association Challenges Vanguard’s Plans to Purchase Two Non-Profit Hospitals

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 is challenging the proposed sale of Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park, Ill., and West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, Ill., from non-profit Resurrection Health Care to for-profit Vanguard Health Systems, claiming the company cannot afford the Illinois purchases as well as the proposed purchase of Detroit Medical Center, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press.

The AFSCE Council 31 says Vanguard cannot afford the purchases because an analysis of its financial records shows that the company has accrued other debt in buying other hospital systems, according to the report. Officials from Vanguard say it can afford to make the deals, and the Illinois facilities risk closing if the sale is not completed.

Vanguard hopes to close the deal on the Illinois facilities by June 30. The company has set a June 1 deadline to finalize the DMC acquisition, according to the report.
