Humana considers dropping out of state ACA exchanges

Louisville, Ky.-based Humana might be following in the footsteps of other top insurers as it considers exiting the Affordable Care Act exchanges in some states in 2017, according to Reuters.

Humana — which sells plans in 15 states — said it’s firming up its plans for the ACA exchanges in 2017, but that it’s mulling over raising premiums and pulling out of the exchanges in certain states. This week, Humana said its first quarter earnings fell 46 percent due to higher costs on individual plans.

The health insurer also claimed new ACA members used more medical services than 2015 members who renewed their plans for 2016, according to the report. As of March 31, Humana insured 875,000 individual members. This is a drop of 150,000 members since March 31, 2015.

Humana isn’t the only insurer to reconsider the ACA exchanges. Last month, UnitedHealthcare announced it plans to exit the ACA marketplace and remain only in a “handful” of states in 2017.
