Hospital Admissions for Uninsured on the Rise

The number of hospital admissions for the uninsured increased by 34 percent from 1997-2006, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

There were 1.7 million uninsured hospital admissions in 1997 and 2.4 million in 2006.

Comparatively, total hospital admissions increased 14 percent during the same period.

The cost of treating uninsured patients has also increased 76 percent, from $11,000 per stay in 1997 to $19,400 in 2006, after adjusting for inflation.
