Hartford HealthCare, Anthem reach 3-year agreement

Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare ended its contract impasse with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield through a new three-year contract.

The in-network agreement is retroactive to Oct. 1, when Hartford HealthCare left Anthem’s provider network after the organizations failed to compromise on rates. The new contract ensures Anthem members who received out-of-network services since Oct. 1 will be billed on an in-network basis.

“We deeply understand and regret the inconvenience and disruption that being out of network has caused our patients and communities,” said Jeffrey Flaks, Hartford HealthCare’s president and COO.

At the height of the dispute, Hartford HealthCare sued Anthem in early October over allegations the insurer changed its emergency care reimbursement policies following the failed negotiations. A district judge tossed that lawsuit in early November.
