Geisinger Medical Center (Danville, Pa.). Geisinger Medical Center is named after Abigail Geisinger, the daughter of a wagon-maker who built the hospital in the early 1900s at age 85. Harold Foss, MD, the hospital’s first surgeon and director, helped grow the hospital from its original 70 beds into what is now Geisinger Health System, the nation’s largest rural health services organization.
Today, the 575-bed Level I trauma center has received Magnet designation for nursing excellence, was named a “Most Wired” hospital and designated as one safest hospitals in the country by The Leapfrog Group. Geisinger Medical Center’s campus includes the Hospital for Advanced Medicine, a 308,000-square-foot facility that opened in 2010 and treats some of the region’s most critically ill patients, and the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, which includes physicians with expertise in more than 40 pediatric specialties and subspecialties.
Geisinger Medical Center is one of the training campuses for Geisinger Health Center’s new neurosurgery residency program, which started in 2013. The program is one of just five neurosurgery programs added in the last five years in the United States.
