Dr. Bates is not only the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Patient Safety, he is also the chief innovation officer of Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he uses fresh ideas to create healthcare improvements that benefit patients and care delivery. Dr. Bates’ work has been essential to the field of patient safety, both highlighting the importance of the issue and providing a path toward solutions. He has published work examining medication errors and the use of information systems to improve medication safety. Dr. Bates has been the recipient of many awards including the first John M. Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety Research from the Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum in 2002.
