Cincinnati City Council Holds Up Sale of University Hospital

The Cincinnati City Council is delaying approval of the sale of Jewish Hospital to Mercy Health Partners, citing concerns about its impact on University Hospital, another member in the struggling Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, according to a report by the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The city council will start a series of public hearings on the deal’s impact on University Hospital, which, unlike other local hospitals, spends millions of dollars on indigent care, medical education and trauma care.

The Enquirer reports that the sale will probably lead to the dissolution of the health alliance, with Christ Hospital and St. Luke Hospitals having withdrawn last year, Fort Hamilton Hospital planning to withdraw this year, and Jewish Hospital probably withdrawing if it is sold to Mercy.
