The health insurer reported its revenue increased to $9.5 billion in the second quarter of FY 2015, up 9 percent from $8.7 billion in the same period of last year.
The company’s boost in revenue is largely attributable to an increase in membership. As of June 30, Cigna had nearly 14.8 million medical customers. That’s up from about 14.2 million medical customers at June 30, 2014.
Cigna ended the second quarter with operating income of $664 million, up from $559 million in the same period of 2014.
“Cigna’s strong second-quarter results once again reflect the consistent effective execution of our global strategy,” said David M. Cordani, president and CEO of Cigna.
Earlier this month, health insurer Anthem entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Cigna in a cash and stock transaction valued at $54.2 billion.
