The hospital went “on bypass” and began rerouting ambulances to other trauma centers early Sunday morning, said Roberta Rakove, Mount Sinai’s senior vice president for external affairs. At one point, Mount Sinai was treating a total of 12 trauma patients, she said. The hospital went “off bypass” on Sunday around 6:30 a.m.
Officers responded to several multiple-victim shootings on Chicago’s west side stemming from gang violence, Chicago Police Public Information Officer Anthony Guglielmi told CNN. The shootings were part of a larger wave of violence in the city this past weekend, which has left seven people dead and 44 wounded, according to ABC 7 Chicago.
Police Chief Eddie Johnson linked the city’s violence with recent mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, in an address to the press Aug. 4. “You have to stop yourself and ask what will it take before we get a handle on what’s going on,” Mr. Johnson said. “Not only in Chicago, but across the country.”
