In 1989, Ms. Ryan served as director of women and children services at Franciscan St. Margaret Health — with campuses in Hammond and Dyer, Ind. While there, she worked on a federal grant and was awarded $7 million to help reduce the infant morbidity and mortality rates for the cities of Gary and Hammond. She was appointed by the mayor of Hammond to oversee the funds and programming of this initiative. Ms. Ryan also opened a prenatal clinic for the indigent — a home for pregnant teenagers — a pediatric intensive care unit and a new birthing center.
Ms. Ryan is also active in civic and community organizations. She serves as the southwest division chair for the March of Dimes and is on the American Hospital Association Governing Council for Maternal Child Health.
Ms. Ryan received a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Elmhurst (Ill.) College. She then received her master’s degree in health administration at Indiana University in Bloomington.
