California seeks to extend ACA coverage to undocumented immigrants

California officials are seeking federal approval for a plan to allow undocumented immigrants to purchase health insurance on the state’s Affordable Care Act exchange, reports The New York Times.

If the plan is approved, they said up to 30 percent of the state’s two million undocumented adults could be eligible to purchase health insurance on Covered California, and they expect approximately 17,000 people to participate in the first year, according to the article.

President Barack Obama has previously said that health insurance subsidies under his signature health law would not go to undocumented immigrants, according to the report. However, supporters of California’s initiative want the state’s plan to be approved under an “innovation waiver,” which allows states to have provisions of the federal law modified, since the program won’t be funded through federal monies, the report states.

Officials claim a federal decision on California’s draft wavier seeking federal approval to sell health plans to undocumented immigrants could be several months away.
