BCBS of Mississippi pharmacy benefit manager investigated in 2019

Mississippi’s state auditor and former attorney general launched an investigation into Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi’s former pharmacy benefit manager, Prime Therapeutics, in 2019, according to the Daily Journal on June 6.

“Wrongful retention of rebates and recoupments” was cited as the reason for the investigation, the article said.

Former Mississippi Gov. Ronnie Musgrove told the publication that his law firm was asked to investigate the drug rebates at BCBS and Prime Therapeutics, but current Attorney General Lynn Fitch terminated the law firm’s contract after taking office last year. A spokesperson for Ms. Fitch said the case is still open.

In a statement to the Daily Journal, BCBS said it was told the state auditor was planning to audit the company and Prime Therapeutics in 2019, but the audit never occurred.

Prime Therapeutics told the publication that “audits of this nature are routine activities and as a policy we do not comment on client audit matters.”

The pharmacy benefit manager is owned by 19 BCBS plans throughout the country, but is no longer under contract with Mississippi’s employee health plan, the Daily Journal said.
