Audit Finds Billing Errors at Three LSU-Operated Hospitals

A legislative auditor found multiple billing issues at three hospitals operated by Louisiana State University, including inadequate control over financial reporting, inability to locate movable property and inadequate controls over consumable inventory, according to a report in The Daily Advertiser.

Due to these issues, The Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans overpaid Healthcare Financial Services, the company hired to provide hospital with professional billing services, $346,715, according to the report. Other errors included failure to ensure all billing personnel were credentialed and eligible for Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement.

University Medical Center at Lafayette failed to bill some professional contract services and professional services proved by UMC employees since fiscal year 2007, according to the report. Lallie Kemp Medical Center failed to timely bill nearly $700,000 in services and billed others more than 300 days late.
