ASA President Dr. Jane Fitch Meets With VA Representatives on Proposed Nursing Handbook

The American Society of Anesthesiologists announced that its President Jane C.K. Fitch, MD, went to Washington, D.C. to meet with Robert Jesse, MD, PhD, principal deputy under secretary for health at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other VA representatives to share the association’s concerns regarding the VA’s proposed Nursing Handbook.

The handbook calls for advance practice nurse anesthetists to attain independent status and function without the support or supervision of a physician. Dr. Fitch presented ASA’s case for maintaining the VA’s long-standing Anesthesia Service Handbook as the anesthesia care guide for veterans.

ASA was told that the handbook has not been finalized and that the VA is considering a public comment period if significant differences remain after meetings with external stakeholders.
