The country’s second largest payer saw its operating revenues increase to $22.2 billion in the second quarter of 2017 from $21.3 billion in the same quarter a year prior. The change reflected higher enrollment in Anthem’s local group and Medicaid and Medicare arms, the payer said. The insurer saw operating revenue attributable to its government business in the second quarter of 2017 increase year-over-year by 4.5 percent to $11.9 billion.

At the same time, Anthem saw expenses rise in the second quarter of 2017 to $21.2 billion, up from $20 billion in the second quarter of 2016. The payer’s benefit expense ratio, or the amount Anthem paid out on insurance claims, increased from 84.2 percent in the second quarter of last year to 86.1 percent in the same period this year.

On the individual market, Anthem reported a 1.8 percent decrease in membership in the second quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.

Year-to-date, Anthem grew profits by 25.7 percent to $1.9 billion, up from $1.5 billion during the first six months of 2016.
