The Maryland Association of Nurse Anesthetists opposes these bills, saying that anesthesiologist assistants are not required to hold medical degrees or to have prior healthcare experience, thus putting patients at risk.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists supports the bills, saying that anesthesiologist assistants are qualified and supports them as members of the Anesthesia Care Team. Johns Hopkins University also supports these laws, citing the state’s shortage of anesthesiologists.
