Aetna wants to address loneliness among older members

Aetna created a social isolation index to measure each member’s loneliness, as social isolation has been linked with negative health behaviors and other illnesses, the insurer said Nov. 13.

Aetna, owned by CVS Health, used claims data and information on social determinants of health to identify which of its private Medicare members are at high risk of loneliness. Members who have a higher risk of loneliness will receive outreach from the insurer, which will help members connect with community resources through its Resources For Living program. The Resources For Living program is available to all of Aetna’s private Medicare members, but those at high risk will be contacted.

Additionally, in 2020 Aetna will offer select plans in Florida a benefit in partnership with Papa, a service that pairs local college students with older adults to help with chores, technology lessons and other activities. Eligible members can schedule up to 10 hours a month through Papa.
