Aetna Q3 Net Income Rises 4%

Third-quarter net income at health insurer Aetna increased nearly 4 percent, from $499.2 million in 2012 to $518.6 million this year.

Aetna’s revenue for the third quarter was approximately $13 billion, a 46 percent year-over-year increase driven partly by the insurer’s acquisition of Coventry Health Care. The Coventry merger was valued at $5.7 billion when announced in August 2012.

For the nine months ended Sept. 30, , Aetna reported net income of approximately $1.54 billion, a 5.2 percent increase from $1.47 billion in the first nine months of 2012. Revenue for the first nine months of 2013 totaled about $34.1 billion, a 28 percent increase from nearly $26.7 billion in the first nine months of 2012.
