Advocates Claim Nearly $20M in Federal Funding Withheld from Nashville General Hospital

Hospital advocates are claiming that nearly $20 million in federal funding is being withheld from Nashville General Hospital, and Nashville’s Metro Council is currently considering a measure that would formally ask all Tennessee gubernatorial candidates to support passing the funds along to the facility, according to a report by the Tennessean.

The $20 million in funding from the federal government came as a result of Nashville General treating uninsured and underinsured patients. The federal government reimburses the state for caring for these types of patients, according to the report.

Nashville General faces a $10.5 million shortfall next year, and advocates claim the hospital has not received enough of the federal money it has generated. TennCare executives, however, said in the report that the advocates “have misunderstood the way the program works” and that the funding is used to operate the entire TennCare program.

The Metro Council will vote on the resolution next month.
